Malte Ubenauf has been working primarily freelance as a theater and music theater dramaturge since 2002. He has worked on productions by Stefan Pucher; Karin Henkel; Luk Perceval; Christopher Rüping; and Armin Petras, among others, and he has continuously collaborated with Christoph Marthaler; Anna Viebrock; Christiane Pohle; and the music theater company NOVOFLOT in Berlin. Stations in his theater career included Teatro Real Madrid; Opernhaus Zürich; Opéra National de Paris; Theater Basel; Vlaamse Opera in Antwerp and Ghent; Oper Stuttgart; Kunstenfestivaldesarts in Brussels; the Salzburg Festival; Deutsches Schauspielhaus in Hamburg; the Bayreuth Festival; Schauspiel Köln; HAU Berlin; Bayerische Staatsoper; Staatsoper Hamburg; Münchner Kammerspiele; and Théâtre Vidy-Lausanne. He taught at, among other institutions, the Berlin University of the Arts (UdK Berlin); the fine art academies in Dresden and Hamburg; and the Academy of Fine Arts Vienna. He has been the festival dramaturge at the Munich Biennale and a member of its artistic direction team since 2016.
Malte Ubenauf initially worked as a director before he switched over to become a dramaturge for Christoph Marthaler at the Schauspielhaus Zürich in 2003. Afterwards he worked for Frank Castorf at the Volksbühne am Rosa-Luxemburg-Platz in Berlin, and also at the Thalia Theater in Hamburg.
